January 27, 1897 British Colonist – “The usual permission to Chinese to celebrate their New Year has been refused by council owing no doubt to the anti Chinese wave which is sweeping over Vancouver.”
At least some things do change.
Update: Maybe not. The Quebec legislature voted to ban Sikhs from the building if they were wearing the kirpin. One member declared that “multiculturalism is a Canadian value, not a Quebec value.” Huh…

1903 – Alexander Blackley, the pastel artist, whose death is announced at the age of 88, was the first artist whose work was reproduced in colour in an illustrated newspaper. Born 1816.
