We:Vancouver 12 Manifestos for the City is a fascinating exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery looking at some of the neat things happening in the city. I was quite honored to be asked to contribute a reading list for the We:Read section.
Here is my list of books which started me thinking about Vancouver and how it was shaped along with a few books that have influenced how I view cities and, in return, Vancouver.
Vancouver: Milltown to Metropolis by Alan Morley
Building the West edited by Don Luxton
Exploring Vancouver (first edition) by Hal Kalman
Project on the City 2 compiled by the Harvard Design School
Vancouver the Way It Was by Michael Kluckner
Every Building on 100 Hastings by Stan Douglas
Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere by Jan Morris
City Life by Witold Rybezynski
City of Vancouver Consolidated Bylaws to 1913
Wanderlust by Rebecca Solnit
London Orbital by Iain Sinclair
Vancouver, A Visual History by Bruce MacDonald
Jade Peony by Wayson Choy
I also contributed a book I made of maps taken from my own note books and the VAG staff made a facsimile of one of my walking tour note books. Check them out in the reading area.
It was interesting to see that Jade Peony was selected by each contributor.
