Joe Fortes was a well-loved Vancouver humanitarian, who provided lifeguarding services and swimming instruction at English Bay beach during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lisa Smith and Barbara Rogers have studied Joe’s life for the last eight years and have compiled a thorough account of his life history including his many adventures both on and offshore—which will make for an entertaining and informative read.
In tribute to Joe’s years of dedicated service, part proceeds from this book are being donated to the Lifesaving Society—Canada’s sport governing body for water safety and expertise. Part proceeds from launch party sales will also benefit Old Hastings Mill Store Museum, Vancouver’s oldest building (circa 1865).
Many thanks for the plug, John! It promises to be a great afternoon! – Lisa Smith
